Jan De Nul Expands Global Portfolio With Taiwan Offshore Wind Contracts and Maldives Reclamation Project

Jan De Nul is a Belgian marine contractor which recently secured major contracts in Taiwan to install the Formosa 4 offshore wind farm export cable installation, as well as deploy its mega hopper Cristobal Colon for Rasmale eco-city reclamation project in Maldives. These successes demonstrate how Jan De Nul is expanding their renewable energy and infrastructure development expertise across Asia-Pacific.

Jan De Nul Wins Taiwan Offshore Wind Export Cable Contract

Belgian marine contractor Jan De Nul has signed a contract with Synera Renewable Energy (SRE) for the installation of export cables on Taiwan's Formosa 4 offshore wind farm. The project involves transporting, installing, and protecting 60 kilometers of subsea HVAC cables to bring renewable energy ashore. Works are scheduled to commence in 2026 and continue through 2027, with Jan De Nul deploying its cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh for the operations.

Formosa 4, situated 20 kilometers off Miaoli County's coast, will feature 35 turbines with a total capacity of 495 megawatts, capable of providing green energy to approximately half a million households. The contract represents a significant expansion of Jan De Nul's presence in Taiwan's renewable energy sector, which already includes ongoing cable installation work for the Greater Changhua 2b & 4 offshore wind farms.

Beyond Formosa 4, Jan De Nul has been appointed as the preferred contractor for export cables on SRE's Formosa 6 wind farm, located 55 kilometers southwest of Formosa 4. The company is also preparing for the installation of export cables for Fengmiao 1 in 2026, providing a continuous project portfolio outlook in Taiwan through 2028. According to Wouter Vermeersch, Director Subsea Cables Offshore Energy at Jan De Nul, these contracts underscore the company's strategic commitment to Taiwan's offshore wind development.

Cristóbal Colón Commences Maldives Reclamation Operations

Jan De Nul's mega hopper Cristóbal Colón, one of the two world's largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers, commenced reclamation works in the Maldives on December 2, 2025. The vessel is undertaking land creation operations for Rasmale, the largest climate adaptation project in the Maldives and a 100 percent net zero carbon smart eco-city development. The deployment of Cristóbal Colón is expected to triple the speed of land creation for the ambitious project.

The Rasmale project represents a significant infrastructure initiative combining climate resilience with sustainable urban development. Jan De Nul's involvement with its advanced dredging capabilities demonstrates the company's role in large-scale environmental and infrastructure projects across the Indian Ocean region.
