PSA International Expands Terminal Capacity and Advances Maritime Decarbonisation Initiatives
PSA International has achieved many noteworthy achievements recently, joining the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation as its inaugural port operator strategic partner and increasing Jurong Island Terminal capacity. Furthermore, multiple industry awards were given out recognizing PSA International's leadership in container terminal operations and sustainability practices.
PSA Joins Forces with GCMD as its Strategic Partner
PSA International recently joined the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), located in Singapore, as a strategic partner. This five-year collaboration marks a key achievement and makes PSA International one of the first global port operators to adopt such an alliance role with this maritime decarbonisation centre.
Through this alliance, PSA will contribute port-side expertise to support the trial and deployment of alternative fuels and emissions-reduction technologies across the maritime value chain. The collaboration focuses on real-world pilot projects designed to accelerate the adoption of new fuel types, including ammonia and methanol, while ensuring operational safety and efficiency at the port level. PSA's global network, spanning more than 180 locations in 45 countries, provides a unique platform for conducting these trials and generating practical insights.
The partnership will see GCMD and PSA conduct trials across PSA's terminals to test protocols for bunkering, carbon offloading, and fuel storage. A key focus area involves addressing the safety challenges presented by newer fuels such as ammonia, which is highly toxic. The collaboration aims to harmonise safety standards and protocols, helping to ready ports and terminals for future fuel operations. According to Professor Lynn Loo, CEO of GCMD, port operators are crucial partners for making the use of future fuels and the offloading of CO2 routine parts of port operations.
Jurong Island Terminal Expansion Plans Underway
PSA Singapore announced a strategic expansion of its Jurong Island Terminal (JIT) to meet growing demand for sustainable and efficient supply chain solutions. Located on the northwestern seafront of Jurong Island, JIT offers twice-daily barge sailings connecting beneficial cargo owners on Jurong Island with PSA's main hubs at Tuas, Pasir Panjang and Brani.
In partnership with JTC, PSA is expanding JIT to increase its annual handling capacity to 300,000 TEU, up from current levels. The expansion, scheduled for completion by 2025, will include new dangerous goods handling and cargo transloading facilities. This development supports Jurong Island's transformation into a sustainable energy and chemicals park, in line with Singapore's Green Plan 2030. Barging operations have demonstrated significant environmental benefits, generating approximately 30% less carbon emissions compared to road transport while reducing labour intensity and road congestion. JIT volumes recorded year-on-year growth of 13% in 2023, reaching a record 149,000 TEU.
Industry Recognition for Operational Excellence
PSA International was recently recognized for its outstanding container terminal operations at the 2025 Asian Freight, Logistics, and Supply Chain Awards. PSA won three accolades including Best Global Container Terminal Operator, Best Green Container Terminal, and Best Container Terminal Europe; showing their dedication to operational excellence and sustainability across their global network.
